Esta es la situación. En la actualidad se generan 2.010 millones de toneladas de residuos sólidos urbanos al año, y el 33% no se maneja de manera ambientalmente segura. De estos 2.010 millones de toneladas, los países de más altos recursos producen más de 1/3, a pesar de que solo representan el 16% de la población. Algunas estadísticas también alarmantes muestran que el 79% de los plásticos terminan en vertederos o como basura en el medio ambiente, el 12% se incinera y sólo el 9% se recicla. Si continúan así nuestras tendencias de producción y gestión de residuos, aproximadamente 12.000 megatones (1.000.000 toneladas = megatones) de desechos plásticos estarán en vertederos o en el entorno natural en el 2050. Esto representaría un aumento del 70% en los próximos 30 años.
Se nos dice, y la mayoría de nosotros lo sabemos, que debemos reciclar más, vivir de manera más sostenible, hacer más y mejor para cambiar la deriva que llevamos. En este momento, quienes están comprometidos con el problema perciben que piden ayuda y cae en saco roto. El cuidado del medio ambiente y la vida sostenible es con probabilidad un ámbito en el que los comprometidos se sienten apasionadamente comprometidos, y el resto se queda más atrás en términos de participación y proactividad. Entonces, ¿cómo podemos involucrar a las personas,cómo concienciarlas y activarlas cuando son pasivas en un tema tan preocupante como el cuidado del medio ambiente?
